• Beijing

  The Great Wall 　　 The Great Wall, a landmark of the earth that can be viewed from the moon, has served as a monument of the Chinese nation throughout history. It runs 6,700 kilometers from east to west across five provinces. Like a gigantic dragon's body, it winds up and down across deserts, grasslands and mountains, ready to show you an incredible diversity of scenery and ethnic people along its way. Its history spans more than 2000 years. A visit to the Great Wall is like a tour through the history backwards. The construction of the Great Wall takes a great army of manpower, composed of soldiers, prisoners, and local people. It is made of masonry, rocks and packed-earth. The construction result demonstrates the manifestation of the wisdom and tenacity of the Chinese people. The magnificence and significance of the Great Wall make it one of the greatest wonders in the world. In 1987, the Great Wall was enlisted in the World Heritage by UNESCO. The Forbidden City 　　 The Forbidden City, also known as the Imperial Palace Museum or Gugong, in Chinese, was the place where the emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties carried out their administration and lived. It is lying at the center of Beijing, to the north of Tiananmen Square. Rectangular in shape, it is the world's largest palace complex and covers 74 hectares. Surrounded by a six meter deep moat and a ten-meter high wall are 9,999 buildings. It is a magnificent sight. The buildings' glowing yellow roofs against vermilion walls, not to mention their painted ridges and carved beams, all contributes to the sumptuous effect. Ancient Chinese people displayed their considerable skills in it. Now it is open to the public as a palace museum where people can see the great traditional palace architecture, enjoy the treasures kept in the palace, and learn of the legends and anecdotes about the imperial family and the court. In 1987, the Palace Museum was named as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Historically and artistically one of the most comprehensive in China, the Palace Museum is now one of the most popular tourist attractions worldwide.  Tian'anmen Square 　　Located at the center of Beijing City is Tiananmen Square?the largest square in Beijing. The grandeur of Tiananmen Gate (Heavenly Peace Gate) is a national symbol, with the Great Hall of the People on the western side and the Museum of the Chinese Revolution and the Museum of Chinese History to its east and west. The Monument to the People's Heroes - the 36 meters obelisk, made of Qingdao granite, dominates the center of the square. The Chairman Mao Memorial Hall and the Qianmen gate sit in the south. Thousands of people come to the Square every day. It is a worthwhile visiting place in Beijing.  The Summer Palace 　　The Summer Palace, the largest and best-preserved royal garden in China, is an outstanding example of imperial gardens. The landscape architect utilized Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake to create a paradise of hills and waters. All the man-made hills, halls, pavilions and temples, including Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill, blend together harmoniously in spite of their individual styles. Ingeniously conceived and elaborately designed, this garden, concentrating the features of the gardens in southern and northern China, can be reputed as the soul of the Chinese gardens. When you stroll among them, you will constantly find the area changing and not crowded. Temple of Heaven 　　 Temple of Heaven was built in 1420 A.D. during the Ming Dynasty to offer sacrifice to Heaven. It is enclosed with a long wall. The northern part within the wall is semicircular symbolizing the heavens and the southern part is square symbolizing the earth. The upper northern half is circular, representing Heaven and the southern half is square, representing the Earth, coincident with the Chinese saying of "Round Heaven and Square Earth". The main buildings on the north-south axis are The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest with the Pavilion of Double Ring Longevity on the left clustered at the northern end are the Imperial Vaulted Heaven and the Circular Altar at the southern.

• Shanghai

  Longhua Pagoda and Longhua Temple 　　 Located on the west bank of the Huangpujiang River south of Shanghai, Longhua Pagoda and Longhua Temple are famous scenic spots in Shanghai. First built in 242 AD, which is during the period of the Three Kingdoms, Longhua Temple is the oldest temple in Shanghai for its long history of over 1700 years. Besides its long history, it is the largest temple in Shanghai. Splendidly constructed, the temple, till today, still keeps the original feature of Buddhist "chan" sect of the Song Dynasty. Buddhist scripture, gold seals and Buddhist statues of Tang, Ming and Qing Dynasty are kept in the temple. Longhua Pagoda was built as early as the 3rd century. Built of wood and bricks, this pagoda, with upturned eaves and hanging bells in the corners of the eaves, is the only pagoda in Shanghai city. Yu Garden 　　Yu Garden, a place of peace and comfort in the heart of bustling Shanghai, dates back to the fabled Ming Dynasty. The present-day Yu Garden occupies an area of two hectares (5 acres) and is built in a style associated with the renowned Suzhou gardens, which are characterized by an exquisite layout, beautiful scenery and artistic architecture. Each pavilion, hall, stone and stream in the garden expresses the essence of South China? landscape design from the Ming and Qing dynasties. There are more than 40 scenic spots scattered throughout the garden, which is divided into six parts by five boundary walls. It may be the most celebrated classical Chinese garden in Shanghai. Xujiahui Area 　　Located in the southwestern part of the metropolis of Shanghai, Xujiahui has a history of 600 years. With the arrival of the 21st century, it unfolds its charm with a completely new look, as another downtown district of Shanghai to emerge as a result of the city's structural reform and opening up. Today the commercial center has expanded to include large-scale specialized markets dealing in telecommunications equipment, computers, furniture, building materials, etc. They are connected to each other by corridors and bridges. The Hengshanlu Recreation Street is a special attraction for visitors from both home and abroad.  Huangpu River and the Bund 　　The yellow and ice-free Huangpu River is 114 kilometers (71 miles) long, 400 meters wide. Cruising on it, visitors could take a glimpse of the yesterday and today of Shanghai. On one side of the river is the bund, which is regarded as a landmark as well as the birthplace of Shanghai. Compared to the west, east of the bund is a newly developing Shanghai. With a length of 1 km, the bund is dotted with various grandiose, solid buildings dating back to the early 20th century. They are of various western architectural styles including Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Classicism and the Renaissance. Due to these imposing buildings, the bund is also reputed as "an international exhibition of architecture". Now, a 646.7-meter-long sightseeing tunnel, connecting the bund to the Oriental Pearl TV Tower is complete and was opened to the public in October 2000, through which visitors can experience a marvelous trip under water.

• Xi'an

  Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses Pits 　　The Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses are the most significant archeological excavations of the 20th century. They are part of the tomb of the first Emperor of all China, Qin Shi Huang. All the figures were distributed over three large pits: No. 1 Pit, No. 2 Pit, and No. 3 Pit respectively. No. 1 Pit is the largest one. There are columns of soldiers at the front, followed by war chariots at the back. No. 2 Pit contains over a thousand warriors and 90 chariots of wood. No. 3 Pit has 68 warriors, a war chariot and four horses. It looks like to be the command center of the armed forces. It was listed by UNESCO in 1987 as one of the world cultural heritages. In all, there are four main categories of figures: chariot warriors, infantryman, cavalryman, and horses. There are generals, middle ranking officers, lower ranking officers, ordinary soldiers, and armored warriors. The latter can be further divided according to their headgear into warriors with a square scarf, a cylindrical bun, or a flat bun. There are kneeling warriors as well. The faces of the individual warriors all have different expressions (lifelike and colorfully painted). They are cultural assets of considerable quality. It is a sight not to be missed by any visitor to China. Huaqing Hot Springs 　　 Huaqing Hot Springs are located 16 miles east of Xi?n at the foot of Mount Lishan in a large park where there are a number of public baths and some modern palaces built in the Tang style. The hot springs, rich in minerals, were highly regarded more than 3000 years ago. Emperor Xuanzong used to spend winter in the company of Yang Guifei (Lady Yang) ?his favorite concubine in the Hall of Fluttering Frost. For centuries emperors came here to bathe and enjoy the scenic beauty, and it has been a favorite spa. Now spending some time at the Huaqing Hot Springs is a must for every visitor to Xi'an. It can be conveniently visited on returning from the Terra-cotta Army site.

• Zhengzhou

  Shaolin Temple 　　The Chinese civilization with a history of 5.000 years has fostered a uniquely splendid cultural flower, Chinese wushu, in the world's arena of culture. Shaolin Temple in Dengfeng County, Henan Province, is known in and outside of China for Shaolin wushu (martial arts). Shaolin Temple was built in 495 as a residence for an eminent monk from India, as ordered by Emperor Xiaowen (467-499) of the Northern Wei Dynasty. It is one of China's most famous ancient temples. The main hall of the temple, though not large, is a treasure house of sculptures. About 300 meters west of the Shaolin Temple is the Pagoda Forest. It has 231 pagodas built during the 1,200 years after 791. The form and size of the pagodas bear the influences of the times and show the ranks of the dead during their lifetimes and the economic situation at the temple. The pagodas vary in appearance and are from one to seven stories high. Most of the pagodas are carved with inscriptions of the occupants' ranks, religious names, and meritorious services.  Longmen Caves 　　Longmen Caves is known as the three great sculpture treasure houses of China. In 1961, the State Council promulgated it a key cultural relic unit for special protection. According to the statistical data by Longmen Caves Research Institute, there are, at present, 2345 caves and niches, some 2800 pieces of inscription, 40 Buddhist pagodas, over a hundred thousand Buddhist images maintaining in both East Hill and West Hill. It is maintained to this day a number of historical data for studying ancient religion, fine arts, architecture, calligraphy, music, dress, as well as medicine. Therefore, it has been considered as a large scaled stone-carved art museum.
